Performs as a key player to the physical plant operation and maintenance of the Central Heating Plant (CHP) and steam distribution equipment on campus. Responsible for the overall maintenance of the CHP steam generation equipment, steam distribution system, steam hot water heaters and ice rink refrigeration system. Secondary responsibility includes CHP operator to cover shifts when scheduled operators are not available.
•Perform scheduled and emergent maintenance on steam generation, distribution and refrigeration equipment including but not limited to boilers, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, pipe, motors, compressors, steam vaults, steam hot water heaters and steam traps.
•Troubleshoot, repair and maintain equipment using computers, PLCs, meters, portable welding equipment, hand and power tools.
•Use the GTAW and SMAW weld processes to make repairs to the steam generation & distribution piping and equipment.
•Perform the opening and closing of all boilers and cleaning for the annual inspections.
•Coordinate and monitor contracted repairs on CHP equipment and the steam distribution system by outside vendors, as necessary.
•Assist with routine daily and monthly preventative maintenance on all steam generating, auxiliary and ice rink equipment as outlined in the CHP Preventive Maintenance Program.
•Act as the backup to the CHP Lead Technician in their absence.
•As an operator, monitor, operate and maintain accurate logs on steam generation and refrigeration equipment and auxiliaries.
•As an operator, monitor, analyze and control manual and automated systems and perform boiler water tests.
•Regenerate water softeners as needed.
•Monitor, operate and maintain satellite and emergency boilers as required.
•Foster a safe working environment and compliance with occupational safety requirements.
•Maintain clean work area.
•Perform other duties as assigned.
Job duties includes working with a computer, i.e., boiler and refrigeration control systems, performing preventative and corrective maintenance work orders in the electronic work control program, completing assigned safety training modules and checking e-mail.
